I am a Federal Technician working for the New York Air National Guard. Although I work everyday wearing the uniform of the United States Air-force, I am a "dual status" employee. I am categorized as a federal worker who is also enlisted in the military in a Guard/Reserve status. For the second time in three months I have been furloughed without pay. The base where I work serves a very important function in supporting military operations throughout the world, including med-evac missions for combat forces serving overseas. Today our aircraft are sitting on the tarmac with no military technicians on hand to maintain them in a "mission capable" status. The media has been covering the impact of the government shutdown with stories about national monuments being closed to the public. This situation goes way beyond the fact that you now can't buy a balloon at the Statue of Liberty. The consequences of the shutdown are global, and it is very inappropriate for the media to portray the federal workforce as being overpaid bureaucrats who do nothing but sit in offices collecting paychecks.
