CNN PRODUCER NOTE Denise Mardel says she and her partner came to the United States from Sydney, Australia, for a trip to celebrate reaching their retirement and bought an annual pass so they could visit as many national parks as possible, but she can't get a refund and is wondering what to do. 'We have arrived for a 55 day driving tour throughout the states. We had envisaged on visiting as many national parks as we could but now we just seem to be driving around aimlessly, wasting money on fuel and accommodation. The only concern I have about the shutdown is the inconvenience it is causing me and the many other tourists that are here that would normally prop up the economy with their tourist dollars.' She adds: 'It's disgusting the way you are holding your citizens and tourists to ransom. The money that we have now wasted getting here as it was to be a national parks holiday is a disgrace. We had purchased an annual pass to get the best benefit from our trip but now that is worthless.' As for her message to Congress: 'Just get your act together. Why are the politicians classed as essential services and get paid? In my eyes, they are not working for the people, so why should they get paid?' She says the answer is right on our dollar bills. 'In God we Trust" has got to be answerable for something.'
