This iReport is part of an assignment:
Shutdown over: What next?
60 and Furloughed
I am an ordinary federal employee, living and normally working in the Midwest. Iowa is my home and the place where I raised my family and the place I will stay. I am a wife, mother and grandmother working hard until I can retire in about 5 years. This is my first furlough and hopefully my last, I am afraid this will impact my retirement if it goes on too long, I am, however, one of the lucky ones. I have a retired husband who can help me over the next few weeks. . .or longer but we do not have the funds to keep us afloat for the duration of our lives. I have many co-workers that are single parents or even just living on a single paycheck, whether they have children or not. I have co-workers that are married and both incomes have been, at least, temporarily lost.
Even if we are given back pay when we go back to work, which I am not counting on, we still have to pay our bills today. A lot of furloughed people are living from paycheck to paycheck, how are they going to survive? If there are any programs out there to help, those programs have likely been cut or are shut down.
I'm asking the tea party and republicans, if there isn't a better way to whine about Obamacare? Why are you hurting the federal government workers and everyone associated with them to suffer because you aren't getting your own way on this. I'm telling you as a mother, I would have sent you to your room for a long time for being unreasonable!! Do you people even have a clue on how it is to live in an average or below average income? Do you know how much we need our jobs? By the way, most of us are not making $180,000 a year, if we were, maybe we would have saved up for the impact of this shutdown. You are making at least 4 times more than I do, and I consider myself to be very lucky indeed. The shut down is due to: stopping a law that increases taxes on rich people and reducing subsidies to private insurers in Medicare in order to help low-income Americans buy health insurance. This is the reason according to the Washington Post.
Really, you are making over millions of people suffer for this? You really think you are doing a good thing for us and our economy?
I'm 60, I don't need this in my life, I don't feel the need to see my co-workers struggle nor see the people in need not receive much needed services. The person that runs our cafeteria at work, is also out of a job and his employees, they are not government workers: how does this help them?
I have friends with disabled children and with disabled spouses or parents; how does this help them?
I am 60, I am from Iowa, truly none of this makes sense to me. Do I need to be from Texas and be part of the tea party to make sense of the shut down: I believe I will remain in the dark because of your tantrum or your stubbornness and your refusal to compromise, America is suffering! This is only the 2nd day and this 60 year old is praying hard that you come to your senses and pray that you please whine & pout in some other way, and leave the rest of us out of your tantrum!
The people need to depend on you, to know how to govern, to know how to compromise and not how to dictate, or show how stubborn you can be.
This 60 year old is ready to go back to work, I'm ready to work for my government. I'm ready to show my loyalty and my eagerness to work for a government that is willing to work for the people and not despite the people.
I'm ready, please send me back to work!
