This iReport is part of an assignment:
Shutdown over: What next?
Be Strong, Obama -- Don't Negotiate With Terrorists
THIS IS A QUOTE FROM A FRIEND WHO STATES IT BETTER THAN I COULD: "I feel like my brain is about to explode. Republicans are about to shut down the government to prevent a law based on the Republican response to HilaryCare from being funded. ObamaCare was enacted by Congress, signed into law by the President, survived a Supreme Court challenge and was essentially ratified by the voters because it was a central theme in the last election. This is just legislative terrorism. Anyone who supports what the Republicans are doing now is basically declaring their support for a completely new form of government where nothing the framers did counts for anything when compared to the short-term gain of beating a political opponent."
My personal story is that not every state has health care for its poorest citizens. I am often one of those poorest citizens, and have been well covered by counties in California and Texas. But when I moved to Montana with my husband in the 90's, and I need daily medication (like many people who need insulin or blood pressure medicine); I went to the county hospital in Montana to sign up and explain my situation: I hadn't found a job yet, we were making money picking berries and selling them to the stores as many locals do. The person at the hospital told me "We don't offer that kind of aid in Montana." I was shocked. I asked what I should do. He said, "We will give you 30 days worth of medication, and you can leave the state." ...So I did. But I think of the poor people of Montana sometimes who can't move for some reason, or don't know it's different in other places. I think how it should be the same all over the country. And I think about what it's like to be invited to leave a state simply because you are poor and have an ongoing illness. "You can leave the state." Real nice. That's my story.
On with a little more opinion and I'll be done:
The President has been stymied at almost every turn throughout his Presidency by "the party of No." One thing he has accomplished is the Affordable Care Act. It will be the Act that defines his Presidency. If it is delayed for a year, it will be so close to the next election, the Republicans are confident that they can kill it at that point. Obama HAS to hold firm now. No matter what people say.
I don't understand how the Republicans can be so sure it is bad before it even starts. Why not try it for a year? If it's really that bad, the people, the Democrats, even Obama may be willing to change or end it. But to hold the country hostage over a perfectly legal law that has not even been tried yet is simply blackmail. And we don't negotiate with terrorists. Even if they hold public office.
