I was supposed to close on my first, brand-new home today for me and my daughter. Talk about excited. Since I am getting a USDA Rural Development loan, I was unable to close today and not sure when or if I will. I found out Tuesday from the bank doing the mortgage that they are waiting on RD to send the approval back but due to the government shut down they can't reach anyone via telephone, they can't submit any new loans or do property searches since the websites have been taken down. My interest rate lock will expire Monday and I could potentially lose my earnest deposit, appraisal and survey fees if this loan doesn't get closed ASAP. I'm in a legal and binding contract to close today, 10/3/13. What should have been one of the most exciting experiences in my life has turned into chaos, anger and dread of losing the money I already have invested due to something completely out of my hands. I have had to cancel utility installations, furniture delivery, insurance and movers and I have no idea when to reschedule. It's really sad and pathetic that the government shows so little concern for the damage their actions can cause and how far it ripples through all the hard working people in this country.
