Tell us the Good Stuff!
MOM MAKES SOME NEW FREINDS ON HER BIRTHDAY!
When I found out from my daughter that there were some deer hanging around the Descanso Beach area on Catalina Island, I loaded up my backpack with some goodies I fleeced from the free continental hotel breakfast that morning.
Because of the drought affecting the island and the fact that residents are very thrifty and careful with water, the poor deer who roam the island have not much to drink or eat.And with babies in tow who need to get fattened up before winter, I knew I had to do something.
Vegetation at the end of a long, hot summer is sparse and there is not too much good green stuff to eat. So imagine my delight when I rented a bike on my birthday weekend and took off in search of some deer I could commune with and love.
After I stopped at the Descanso Beach Club and tenjoyed a nice, refreshing swim, I decided to walk up the hill to the showers and rinse myself off of sand before riding back into town. When I arrived at the showers, who was standing there but a nice mama deer and two babies!
Looks like they were hanging out drinking the water that puddled near the shower area. I reached into my goody bag and took out some breakfast rolls and offered them to the visitors.
One baby was not too agreeable and wandered off but mom and the other baby started gobbling the food. In fact, mom deer was enjoying her treat so much, drool was running down from her mouth. Then I took out some hard-boiled eggs and bran muffins. Those were big hits too. The deer seemed to like their feast and did not seem skittish at all.
I was so happy to be visiting with these deer but I kept quiet because I did not want anybody to see us and come bother them. Right before I left to go, I thanked the momma deer for being nice. I then kissed her on her wet snout and thanked her for being such a good mom to her babies.
It was the best birthday present !
