I am a 31 year old disabled veteran who has 3 degenerated discs in my lower back, one with a growth, and two with fractures; among other military related issues, making it so I cannot work. I am currently enrolled in college, but due to the veteran services being cut off I have lost all veteran support and services, and cannot finish my claims for disability or re-training. I am married to an Active duty sergeant in the Army who is currently TDY. We are on orders to relocate the first week of next month. Our orders have been put on hold and we are unable to schedule our move or do anything to prepare at all. His training is currently still ongoing, but he may be unable to return home the end of this month after his training is over and outprocess base here, since he is stationed out of here, which is a majority ran civilian institution (DLI). We have already put in our notice to vacate our current residence so if this shutdown does not end by the end of this month, we could be forced out of our current location. I do not drive or have any family or friends where we live (since this was supposed to be a temporary location it was something I just dealt with for the time) so if he is unable to return home and I am forced out of our place I (and my cats) will have no where to go and no way of moving our stuff. I have excess funds in my student loan that were supposed to be released to me (that were going to be used to help pay off my overall loan and with the move) and those are on hold. I have no income coming in, because veteran funds are stopped. I had scheduled a break for my classes for our relocation and cannot extend it because of the school policy of time that can be missed and am currently scheduled to start classes back up within a week of when we are supposed to get to our next duty station. With the freezing of our move we may leave later meaning I will be academically withdrawn from my school because I will not be able to start when scheduled. Basically I am stuck in a location with no idea of when I am going to be able to leave, with no family, friends, income, a messed up schooling progress, and/ or veteran services. This shut down has effected me in just about every way possible. I am just one of many experiencing these problems. I have many friends who are overseas and stateside and supposed to be returning home the end of this month, and like me there orders have been cancelled. We have no access to answers or help since the majority of the offices that handle these issues are closed due to furloughs and no one to lean on for support. This government closure is going to cause a lot of innocent military and non military families to become homeless among other things, because companies and landlords are not taking the current situation into account and helping them. We can't even give them an answer on how long we will be here because our orders are cancelled or on hold and congress in general (personally I have been following what is going on and both sides need to get their heads out of their asses and compromise, it is not one side or one parties fault, both sides are not budging and that needs to change) The government is supposed to be for the American People that is why they were voted in, it shouldn't be about petty differences. Yet, the ones suffering are the people not any member of congress (as for some reason, even though they make more than 99% of the rest of the nation and who's salary is set for life, get to keep their pay while a vast majority of the remainder of the nation loses theirs and/or their job). I think that if we stripped all of their salaries and benefits along with services they would come up with an agreement real quick. And that money could be used to put towards the debt/deficit. Difference is they could miss a few paychecks and still make their rent and bills where a good portion of the rest of America would be on the streets because they live paycheck to paycheck because of the cost of this country. As a disabled veteran who has been disabled of all of my entitlements, who is married to an active duty soldier who is TDY, and our move is delayed, we are in risk of losing our place of resident, ruining our credit, and much more, it is sad to think that I have and he is fighting for the rights that our government is stripping us of because of their indifferences and able to communicate and function as mature adults. I am saddened deeply by this and it shows that a lot much change within our political system. Much like the fact that our own government cannot follow and act on our constitution in which founded and establishes what this nation stands for-that no member of congress or the president should be exempt from any law or rule that is imposed on the people. and yet- they live in one standard on the expense of the people. Therefore they are all guilty of breaching the law and should be penalized. I vow to start with their paychecks. Make them work without pay like many of the other government/federal workers.
