This iReport is part of an assignment:
Shutdown over: What next?
This veteran speaks out
I am a cancer patient, and I have moderate PTSD, due to getting cancer where I was stationed, and the effects of those jobs. When I should have been medically discharged, I was given an honorable discharge due to some paper mess-ups in the Military. However, I would of stayed in if they allowed me to and continued to fight for our people. I am lucky and was able to find a job, yet it does not pay all of the bills. We rely on our veterans pay and benefits as I am taking college classes to try and keep the job I do have. We have fought for our country along with other veterans who are in the same boat as us or worse. I do not think it is fair that the President and Congress gets paid and the rest of us suffer. Especially, when it is the congress, Senate, and the Presidents fault for not doing their jobs properly and timely. The main priority should be the people they supposedly work for in the US, not themselves. The Congress, Senate, and President are being selfish and should not get paid as well as the rest of the country. They have plenty of money, and obviously do not care if the very people they are supposed to be fighting for is getting penalized for their mistakes. It is a sad moment in history where they would take away the measly salaries of the people who do not even get a pinch of theirs, and have fought for the very men and women who are doing this to us. My husband and I do not even get 100% benefits after everything that has happened to us due to defending our country. I am not complaining of what we do get, we are grateful for what we do get. However, I am working a full time job, going to school full time, fighting cancer, and taking care of my family, which the VA is helping us, for both school and our conditions, without this pay I will lose everything I have worked so hard to accomplish. I have to do this because my husband cannot find a job. My husband and I will lose the help we receive from the VA for our conditions as well with this shutdown. I urge the Congress, Senate, and President to please give up your pay and live like the rest of your citizens live. However, this will not happen, because they do not care about the very country and citizens they work for only themselves. The sad part if the Military community will continue to fight for the people of this country because we care. However, it is sad that we will and the very men and women who lead this country will not. So since the government will not give up their pay maybe they should sit in a room and stop being selfish and get on with it, so the American people especially the middle and lower class families do not suffer anymore. That is my two cents.
