This iReport is part of an assignment:
In the same vein as The New York Times and The Washington Post, I to wanted to explore why Anne Hathaway has become the most polarizing actress in Hollywood. For those of you who don't know who "Hathahaters" are, they are a group of people, mostly females, who have some sort of personal vendetta against Anne Hathaway and seek to ruin her or bring her to hate herself by posting very hideous remarks on social media platforms.
On Twitter, Hathahaters have a hashtag, and on Facebook they have groups and pages. In reality, they are the equivalent of the catty popular girls in middle school.
In an online poll on Survey Monkey, I asked people to weigh in---whether they hated Anne Hathaway or not---on why they think people feel this way about her. An overwhelming majority of the respondents were women, which is also what most Hathahaters tend to be, but the people who responded to my survey indicated that they had no feeling of hatred toward the actress. At most, they find Anne Hathaway to be just a little irritating.
The three main reasons identified for the backlash toward Hathaway were her perkiness, the "perfect" vibe she gives off, and that she just rubs people the wrong way. My respondents' reasons were very mild in contrast to the list BuzzFeed compiled of reasons actual Hathahaters gave on various social media platforms.
1.) Her face full of mouth and teeth
2.) She looks stupid
3.) She ruined "The Dark Knight Rises"
4.) She ruined "Love and Other Drugs"
5.) She ruined "Ella Enchanted"
6.) She ruins everything
7.) She's untalented
8.) She thinks she's cool when she's really boring
9.) She's worse than Vanessa Hudgens, who is terrible
10.) It's complicated
11.) She's too perfect
12.) She can't compare to the greats
13.) She brings people together in their hatred
14.) There's no real reason
Even after I closed my online survey, a member of the Hathahaters Facebook group just had to leave me a message: "I'll help you, if you don't mind. Well, basically everything. You can always tell she's trying too hard. She's a terrible actress, can't act at all, but she thinks she can, which also bothers me. She ruins every film, like The Dark Knight Rises and Love & Other Drugs. Her personality is incredibly annoying, but overall, I just think it's the fact that she tries too hard. That's come across as horrible to be honest. Hope I was helpful!"
Whether this backlash toward Anne Hathaway is widespread or permanent is hard to say. It appears to mostly be contained on social media. But it isn't just catty girls who are jealous of the actress who have admitted to being less than enchanted with her. Howard Stern brought up his negative feelings for the actress in an interview with James Franco, who wasn’t particularly active in defending his former Oscar’s co-host, and online publications all over the web appear to be having fun with this recent backlash at the actress’ expense. Perhaps it’s true and we all do like to come together in our hatred. We need someone to talk smack about, so someone else is bound to come along who people can hate as fervently as Anne Hathaway. The backlash shouldn’t be permanent, as it seems to be more of an internet meme than anything else. Hathahaters will tire of hating her publicly because they will find that the rest of the human race no longer finds them amusing, no longer wants to pay any attention to them.
