My daughter worked so hard to make it into the Naval Academy. I kept my expectations in check, fully understanding her chances were slim, but she got in with an appointment from Senator Tammy Baldwin (then Wisconsin Rep) and really fast swim times. Her dream of swimming on #1 D1 swim team helped to fuel her summer as she spent 6 weeks of "Plebe Summer" hell to get her to the start of her first college swim season. It's bad enough this government shut down means she missing Chemistry labs and English class. I know she isn't all that upset about missing Chemistry. BUT when the Department of Defense cancelled all varsity athletics at the service academies, you stabbed a young girls dreams. The Naval Academy doesn't use government funds for athletics but that doesn't seem to matter. Nearly a 3rd of all midshipmen play a varsity sport and that doesn't seem to matter either. It about how it looks to have servicemen and women playing while the government is shut down. Really!?
My daughter tells me if the shutdown continues, she may be sent home. I have no idea what that means to her college career, to her swim team, to commitment. I can understand that a bunch of politicians can't get along, what I don't understand is why varsity sports have be to cancelled. It is as if the government wants as many folks to suffer as possible with this shut down.
