My name is Stefani and I am married to a Sgt in the U.S Army Reserves. Since this shutdown a bill was passed to continue to pay our troops but what they didnt tell you is that it did not continue to pay its reserve soldiers. My husband deployed to Afghanistan for a 10 month tour and returned home in march of this year. He is now released from active duty so he has to drill one weekend a month. It may not sound like much to you but not recieving a paycheck which is owed to him from september has financially put us in a hole. My husband recently started nursing school with his Post 9/11 Gi Bill Benefits. The VA website states "VA has funds available to ensure claims processing and payments in the compensation, pension, education, and vocational rehabilitation programs will continue through late October. However, in the event of a prolonged shutdown, claims processing and payments in these programs will be suspended when funds are exhausted." His first payment is due next month and that money is used to pay our bills since he can not work as much. If we loose this benefit we have no other options. He is considered a full time student and works part time at a local grocery store. Our electric is on the verge of being shut off and no one is able to help us. Local churches and organizations who normally help people in need are out of funds. My electric company doesnt care if we dont have money, it shuts off when the bill isnt paid. Unlike alot of people where I live, we dont recieve food stamps or government assistance because "we make too much". Meanwhile my fridge and food pantry are running low and have no way to be replenished. It breaks my heart that my husband has to live this way when he has sacrificed his life and family for this country. I can only imagine how many other families are going through what we are going through. I wish our government would come to an agreement and end this shutdown before things get even worse!
