Hundreds of cattle killed by blizzard in Western South Dakota

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Casey Phillips grew up on a cattle ranch in New Underwood, South Dakota. Over the weekend, a blizzard came through the area and wiped out hundreds of cows, according to CNN affiliate KFYR. Phillips owns some of the cows on the ranch, but the majority of the cattle belong to his parents and his cousin, he said. His mother, Paula, photographed the dozens of dead cows on their ranch on Monday.

“This is a horrible, horrible mess,” he said. “Some ranchers lost 100% of their cattle and their families will be left with absolutely no way to make a living and the bank may take their land, also the government offices aren't even open to help in any way.”
