Shutdown over: What next?
Welcome to My Nightmare
As we all know – there was in fact, a govt shutdown and we now begin our second week of uncertainty as federal employees. Most of my reserve cash has been spent on funeral and associated arrangements. The family had planned a memorial on public lands and we were approved to go ahead with it, even though there is a gov shutdown. I was told late last Friday, that reconsidering the shutdown and perceptions, that we could not hold his memorial service where we had planned. Thankfully, a private landowner nearby, who knew my husband, heard our story and offered his home for the service – it is planned for Saturday.
Today, I recd 60% of my regular pay, as that is what was covered in the pay period with last year’s funds. This is also my final paycheck until the shutdown is over. My husband’s pension is held-up in the govt shutdown, as is my paycheck, because no one is working. He also had a life insurance policy through the govt, which I don’t have access to because of the govt shutdown and it not being processed. Our assets are frozen, pending the completion of necessary paperwork for his proof of death. At this point – liquidating these assets appear to be the most viable option and I am anxiously awaiting the death certificates to make this happen.
I am so disappointed in our Congress and our POTUS, as they continually use the federal employee as their “example” for cost reductions. Do not doubt that this is a play to the media and the people, as there are many other options to reduce federal spending. I pray for other families that this is seriously impacting and hope that an end comes soon, as I know that there are many others that don’t have the financial option that I do – and they are quickly running out of resources.
