This iReport is part of an assignment:
Shutdown over: What next?
We the (little) people
My son has autism – what will no meds or therapy do to him. What if the other insurance doesn’t cover what he needs. What if my husband is laid off again and both of us aren’t working, and have no health insurance in another two weeks? What about my employees – what if they do as they are saying, and get new jobs and when we do get back to the office I have half a team and a huge backlog of claims? How will that serve the public? These people are filing for disability, they need our help. Having half a staff because they’ve all found other jobs, and twice the work is not going to help the disabled get their claims processed.
This is going to steamroll and its not going to be pretty. When we get back to work, it is going to be problematic. When we are paid, will we get back pay? What is that going to look like? Will it be lump payments so we can be taxed to death? We were told we may have to use our annual leave and pay ourselves? Will our health coverage be reinstated? Where are the answers to these and so many more questions?
Is Congress going to pay our overdraft fees? Talk to our creditors? Buy our kids school lunches or put gas in our cars while we search for new jobs?
I know... I know.... there is a ‘bigger picture’. The debt ceiling. The debt. The republicans. The democrats. Don’t pay them for two weeks – all of the congressmen and see how quickly they’d come to some decisions. Mr. President as well. No pay til its resolved. No health insurance til its resolved. I’ll bet we’d get some resolution then.
We the (little) people of the United States of America deserve more from our government than this.
We really do.
