By Ben O. Tesiorna
391 barangays in Southern Mindanao Region have been placed under Comelec watch as authorities prepare for the barangay elections.
The Police Regional Office 11 said the 391 barangays have been identified by Comelec as areas of concern.
Just a few days back, the number is only 174 with Compostela Valley province having the lion share of the election hotspots with 101 barangays.
But in an interview with Police Regional Office 11 director Chief Supt. Wency Pascual Thursday, he said that the number has gone up to 391. He said though that none of these barangay hotspots are located in the urban areas.
He said all of them are in the outskirts and are identified to have presence of lawless armed groups like the New People's Army. He said none of the barangays have been under the Comelec watch due to political violence.
Police Senior Inspector Gretchen Cinco, Police Regional Office 11 spokesperson, meanwhile assured the public that police and military will be tightly watching these election hotspots.
Come October 19, the joint police and military peace and security coordinating center will be meeting with the Comelec for final assessment of the hotspot areas.
Meanwhile several known personalities have joined the election barangay here in Davao City. Among them were former city councilor and militant leader Angela Librado-Trinidad and January Navares-Duterte, wife of Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte.
There were rumors earlier that no less than City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte prodded Trinidad to run for barangay captain so she could be the next Association of Barangay Captains president in the city and thereby sit as representative in the City Council.
Vice Mayor Duterte however said that it is not the mayor that would choose who would be the next ABC president but the barangay captains themselves. VM Duterte was once the ABC president thus his entry to politics.
