United Health Not Paying out Claims, Now Autism Center Must Close
- dsashin, CNN iReport producer
I am writing to inform you of some sad news. I have executed the temporary suspension of operations at our two facilities, the Colorado Autism Center and at A Family Harbor. After seven months of trying to find a good working relationship with United we are unable to continue to financially pay for our basic company bills. I have been working with United in a very concerted way since the transition but every month we have fallen farther behind. Our company has fought hard to ensure no disruption to your child’s care but we do not have unlimited financial resources. At this point we are around $400,000 past due in unpaid claims for our companies. We have taken out lines of credit in order to give United time to fix their billing issues. However we cannot go further. This is why we are ceasing services temporarily. I fully expect that United will now work to fix these billing issues but I need help from you all to voice your concerns. I have attached a letter for your review with contact info for you to follow up. Your voices are worth a thousand meetings I could have with United and Tricare. I would encourage you to voice your displeasure that your son or daughter’s services will be disrupted. This is especially concerning since we know every day in treatment is precious towards getting your child the care they need. I want to personally thank you all for supportive calls I have already received and please rest assured we are not stopping and will continue to work towards getting services started as soon as possible.
Dear Clients, Families, and Friends:
We are writing to inform you of a grave situation which has directly impacted all of us.
In April of this year, United Healthcare Military and Veterans Services took over management of the Tricare insurance program in our region. This program manages the health insurance benefits for Active Duty Military Personnel, Veterans, and their Dependents.
Our organizations, A Family Harbor and the Colorado Autism Center, were founded to provide behavioral health services to our military service members and their families. We currently serve over 900 active duty military children and spouses and our autism center provides specialized intensive autism treatment for over 50 military families.
Since the transition from Triwest to United, we have worked collaboratively to ensure no disruption of services for our clients. After seven months of transition, our organizations can no longer financially overcome the lack of payments for our past services. Since April, United Healthcare has not accurately processed claims or made timely payments, resulting in extreme financial stress on both companies.
As of Monday October 14th, A Family Harbor and Colorado Autism Center will temporarily cease operations. Our companies can no longer pay our employees and do not have the financial commitments from United Healthcare to remain open. It is our hope that this will be temporary, however it is solely dependent on United Healthcare making significant changes in how it does business.
We believe our military families deserve better than this. We hope you will partner with us in contacting United Healthcare and let them know how this has impacted your family. We trust that the voices of our military families will help United Healthcare understand the impact their business practice has had on our community.
