Old School Halloween on Andrew's AFB 1993 1995
Before Halloween stores popped up every year, full of ready to go Zombie kits, blood, gore and body parts, we had to be as creative as possible.. In 1995 we lived on Andrew's Air Force Base. Our yard was always one of the most traveled on Halloween night. Nothing compared to what is available today but lot's of hard work for some of the base kids putting it all together. We stuffed bodies with newspapers for a week, created home made grave stones and all manner of creepy vignettes. Eerie sound effects and scary music set the tone. For the younger ghouls we always had someone stand at the driveway with a kinder, gentler costume to pass out treats to the not so brave.
Kids were only allowed to trick or treat for two hours and the yard had to be cleared by morning. Afterwards we invited all of our characters inside for home made chili, hot chocolate or cider and dessert . We are still in touch with many of those kids today. They have little monster's of their own that look forward to All Hallow's Eve.
