Bullying awareness: Your story
Bullying in Elementary schools
I also found out that at school the staff was telling Ben that if he didn't stop crying for me he would be in lunch detention or he would miss recess. This is the same school where my 5th grade daughter 1.5 years ago was having her lunch box stolen. I told the principle and it took several days for them to solve the problem. I told my daughters 5th grade teacher and she took care of the bully situation as soon as I told her, thank goodness. I asked the principle why did it take so long to stop the girl from stealing my daughter's lunch . The principle said they didn't want the girl who was stealing lunch boxes to know my daughter told on her. So basically your child can steal lunch boxes but you cant cry for mom??? I also had a time where I had to go to the school to change Ben during Lunch when he had another bathroom accident. The nurse in the clinic did not know how Ben got to the clinic or who brought him. They were unaware that Ben had not ate his lunch again. I found out they had sent my child down from the cafe' with a 7 yr old. So basically a 7 yr old was babysitting my 6 yr old child and walked him to the other side of the school to the clinic with out a pass or a note. There were many doors that my son walked passed and he could of ran out of any of them. I also was told one day that my son was fine during school and then told by another staff that Ben was extremely upset and they had to stay with him to calm him down. After the tragedy in Conn. The school so called upped their security. They placed a lady at a child's desk and made everyone sign in. Then they placed orange traffic cones in the hall with notes on them that said do not pass. This of course was a joke.
But back to the bully story.
I told the principle of the school right away about the bullying and the doctor appointment. In fact it was with in minutes of that doctor appointment. The principle denied that Benjamin was being bullied. The principle denied it with in minutes of me telling him. I took Ben back to the doctor for a re-check and I told the doctor that the school denied it right away. The doctor said "You have no choice you have to take him out of that school and find another school" I didn't know what school to switch him to. Ben was horrified of school at that point and to take him to a totally new school would of been too much. I decided to home school him on my own by following the Virginia's SOL standards. I had to get Ben healthy. Benjamin was unable to get his much needed dental work done because of him not eating and losing weight. Once Ben knew he did not have to go back to that school. He calmed down and he started eating again. I had Ben tested by the Family Resource Center in Colonial Heights Virginia. I wanted to know if Ben had a disorder or LD issues. I even suspected Dyslexia. I guess I was still looking for answers beyond Bullying because I had a hard time believing my child could of been that sick and hated school that much from bullying alone. Through many test with Educational Specialist, Psychologist, Speech Pathologist , Social worker..The conclusion was Ben did not have any disorders or disabilities. They did say he had a very negative experience in school and he seemed phobic about returning to school. They also said that he was below average in reading but was stronger in Math. If we returned him to a different elementary school in Colonial Heights Virginia we would have to do it a little at a time because of how Ben felt about school. If we wanted to see if he had Dyslexia we would have to go to a special center and pay for testing.
We were going to try taking him to another school for second grade this year. But the day we went out to get Ben's schools supply, we went to Ben's favorite Mexican restaurant, and well Ben vomited in the booth and in the bathroom. We thought he was sick but he was not. He was nervous about going to school and buying school supply. We didn't know what to do. Ben came to our bedroom that night and he asked "What if the new school has bullies too?"
What we didn't know was that our prayers were about to be answered. My sister called me and saw a commercial about a Free Online Public school call K12.. I saw the commercial too and I called right away and signed Ben up for second grade ASAP. Ben is a registered public school child with King and Queen county schools of Va. who provide the option of K12 through Virginia Virtual Academy. After Benjamin's test with his K12 second grade teacher we discovered that Ben had missed basic phonics in kindergarten and in first grade. They added a phonics program to his second grade curriculum. Benjamin has passed 2 of his spelling test with 100%. His reading has improved already and its only Oct. His confidence is higher because with K12 you never fail. Anything you don't pass is called un-mastered. You can go back and retake anytime you want. If you pass with 80% or higher then it is labeled as mastered. K12 fits your child's needs. In a traditional public school your child has to fit them.
As far as people asking me about Ben socially missing out by being home. Who says my child has to sit beside kids Monday through Friday to have social skills? My son plays soccer and he plays with kids almost everyday. We also have family and friends he socializes with.
What is my child missing by NOT being in a traditional school? Does he miss the bullies? Does he miss not knowing how to read and spell well? Does he miss the stress and sickness? No he does not!!! My son is Happy, Healthy, growing and learning with K12 !!! He is 45 pounds now and even is hemoglobin is 15.1 now. Which is great. Thank You to the K.12 program. Finally a public school that gets it!
