Boy 6 drowns and dies. On carnival victory ship
Cruise ship passenger Deshaun Christian was on the Carnival Victory where a 6-year-old boy from Central Florida drowned on Sunday. The iReporter was nearby with his family and shot this chilling video of people trying unsuccessfully to revive the boy. Moments before, Christian said people were eating and dancing around the pool. The DJ, standing on the deck above the pool, first spotted the boy struggling. He stopped the music in a panic and called for help. Christian said a guest jumped into the pool with his clothes on and pulled the boy out, where a crew member tried to resuscitate the boy.
"It was a lot of chaos, people were going crazy, people were praying, they had their hands to the sky. It was a scary scene, seeing a little boy just lifeless," Christian said. "There were a lot of aduilts, but why wasn't anyone watching the kids? You'd think Carnival would have lifeguards around the pool."
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, the incident appears to be accidental. A Carnival Cruise spokeswoman said the child was on the ship during the last leg of the 4-day Caribbean cruise.
"Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time. The company's CareTeam is providing assistance and support," a statement read. In a follow-up email to CNN, a company spokeswoman said Carnival does not have lifeguards on duty at its pools. "Parental supervision is required for children under 13. In this case, there was a parent present at the time of the incident," she said.
