Monday, after the shutdown, I was planning to file for Medicare, being 68 now. I can still file, but who knows when the paperwork will be processed. My social security payment is supposed to be the last Wed of the month – perhaps in jeopardy now. After 8 years active USMC and 22 years reserve, my husband qualified for his military pension at 60 - first payment to be Nov 1 – in real jeopardy. He and I both were going to sign up for Tricare insurance – now in question. My husband’s civilian job is for a defense contractor. Every day we wonder if this is the day when the government cuts off all military contracts, which they have a right to do. This would mean company layoffs. Try getting a job in defense at age 60. Equally as important as any of the above, our 401k’s will take a deep plunge if the debt ceiling is not raised. We thought we had our entire 401k savings of 30 years safe or low risk in mutual funds.
So what is affected by current political games? Health insurance, current and future employment, income and savings. Our whole safety net in jeopardy. And to top off the sundae, we had planned and saved for a vacation in early Nov. Due to uncertainty, we now have to cancel, losing $3,000 in non-refundable prepaids. Is the story like other hardships? No, but it’s all totally unnecessary if only the politicians would do their job of governing.
