Obamacare: Your story
No trouble signing up in Texas
“I had no trouble getting in, no trouble looking at the insurance available,” said Malecek, who lives in Greenville, Texas. “Unfortunately, we’re really limited in Hunt County; it’s Cigna or Blue Cross Blue Shield. It’s all set up so Linda and I can go in and Linda can pick which plan she wants.”
They were dropped from insurance 10 years ago at a small company because Malecek and her daughter’s ex-husband were determined to have preexisting conditions. Since then, they’ve been unable to find insurance they can afford.
“I went through the calculation tool. They would pay 300 some dollars toward her insurance if she went with certain plans,” said Malecek. Her daughter still works for the same employer, but her salary is down to $28,000, as she’s only there part-time. “With her conditions, she can’t afford the high deductible and high copay. That alone would bankrupt us.”
