This iReport is part of an assignment:
Shutdown over: What next?
I am 60 years old, disabled and no longer able to work. And I have to wait on the idiots in government???? I, along with almost 4 million other disabled veterans, cannot wait. I did apply for my SSA benefits but it's been seven months already and no end in sight. Also, I've been cautioned about being optimistic...that the majority of applicants get denied from the start! I've paid into SSA for more than 40 years...this is MY money! I'm also supposed to receive widow's benefits again; however, the SSA is trying to claim five months or more of that, citing there was an overpayment to my daughter as they did NOT recognize her homeschooling! We fought with SSA for months over this and the Director of Private Schools at the CA State Board of Education even got on the phone with the SSA rep and explained how the certification worked. At that time, I thought the matter was settled. However, I was notified that the SSA did NOT resolve the matter and that I would have to contest their ruling, which I have. That matter is also delayed now due to the shutdown.
If I cannot work things out with my landlord, the car company and the storage company, I will lose everything and probably my life. I am NOT suicidal; I could not survive on the streets and I have nowhere else to go. The VA is inundated with homeless veterans and while there are programs to get them off the streets, there are still thousands, if not hundreds of thousands who are on the streets. This is appalling!!!! We served our country and this is how we're repaid??? Thanks.
