This iReport is part of an assignment:
Shutdown over: What next?
Furlough – Day 14 – Did I See This Coming?
Now 14 days into the shutdown, I am not surprised where we have ended up. From the beginning my gut feeling has rung true. That feeling, summed up, is that we are not dealing with rational people in government. It was clear when our government let the fiscal cliff and subsequent across the board sequestration hit last year rational thinking and compromise had taken a vacation. Thus this shutdown is not a surprise.
However, it is more than simply the fiscal cliff and sequestration. If you look at how many new laws have been passed in the last few years, how often party lines have been able to be dissolved, or the most telling of all, the agendas pushed by a small fraction of the government, you see clearly why this is happening. Regardless of what side of the fence you sit on, no one can deny there is a fraction of our government interested only in disruption. The majority of America is not ready for extreme politics or interested in them. Yet those with fringe views garner votes, get elected, and end up in positions of high influence. The results of their actions are clear in things like falling off fiscal cliffs, sequestration, government shutdowns, etc.
So was I surprised when the government shut down? No. However, I am surprised we are this close to the debt ceiling with no plan? Why? In our country Money is the almighty. With so much revenue and economic stability to be potentially lost from not approving a new debt ceiling, it is amazing to me we even made it this far. As one whose family has interests in a number of institutions and enterprises I am very fearful of what a default of US loans would mean. Much of my family’s security and future are riding on a strong US dollar. And I am only a very small player in a very big game. Thus, I am most surprised that the big dogs and cats in the business world have not forced the hand of both parties to make something happen before we see negative economic impacts.
Am I surprised our government and economy are so mired down by the actions of relatively few people? Not really given I am a student of history. However, what is so scary for me, regardless of my own political and personal beliefs, is seeing history repeat itself. So yes I saw this coming. Though I keep praying it does not continue.
