I am a federal employee of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, in Kittery, Maine. Before the shutdown I was injured while performing a particularly dangerous and difficult job as part of submarine overhaul. I sprained (or possible tore) the ligament in my spine, and as I result have been receiving physical therapy in order to recover. However, due to the shutdown my physical therapist was furloughed, and about a third of my prescribed sessions were cancelled. That's not to mention the half paycheck I just received after having myself been furloughed biting into my finances. This shutdown has not just had an impact on my wallet, it has had a tangible negative impact on my health and my prognosis for recovery. I'm sure that in time I will indeed recover, but I fear the fact that these leaders turned their backs on me after having been injured working for our national defense will sting long after.
