We are a family of four with two young children. My husband is a veteran and an 18 year Border Patrol Agent. I am a fourth generation owner of a family owned small business. Currently my husband is working 50 hours a week without pay. When this shutdown began, and we discovered his job would soon fall under the "excepted" status (which apparently means "you still have to go to work and eventually we'll get around to paying you") I attempted to coordinate a nation wide call in sick day for the entire CBP. I discovered that the men and women in CBP have too much honor and pride in their position to risk the security of our citizens by leaving our borders and ports unmanned. Funny isn't it? These men and women will show up and do their jobs without pay, but the congressional members are continuing to receive their large salaries and refuse to do their job to protect the security of the citizen's they were charged to represent. You may be thinking, "O well, you guys are doing just fine! You own your own business"! I wish this were the case. Our reality is that I just started my business a month prior to the shutdown. My business will be greatly impacted if our country goes into default as we depend on the country's economy. We need consumers to be confident in the economy. We need mortgage rates to remain reasonable. We need people to remain employed, and we need to employ people. Each of these things is dependent on the other, and all dependent on a stable economy. Our family currently relies solely on my husband's income, which is now nil. This is the thanks we get from a party who claims to be the largest supporters of veterans, civil servants and small business owners. We get the largest most public slap in the face! My husband and I typically fall on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to political issues, but we are united in our disgust for the current state of our government!
