As a part of a small team down here in New Zealand that provides logistical support to the scientific work that is carried out on the Antarctic Continent over the polar summer it has been very sad to see in some cases years of scientific work go out the window as just about all of the scientific work carried out by the NSF this polar summer has been cancelled due to the continued standoff in Washington. It has been heartbreaking to hear stories of scientific experiments that have take years to set up in in-hospitable conditions basically rendered useless. Over the last 3 years I have had the privilege of deploying from Christchurch New Zealand down onto the US McMurdo Base to assist in with the unloading and loading of equipment and supplies sent from mainland US down to McMurdo. I am just one of a group of 6 local New Zealand employees who have had their summer contracts terminated. The effects of the standoff are felt even way down here in new Zealand.
