This iReport is part of an assignment:
    Wildfires blazing near you

    Bushfires near Sydney, Australia

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ABG912 told me, 'he sky really lit up in the late afternoon yesterday with a thick orange and gray smog. The fires themselves sort of ring the city and are all dozens of km away from the central business district/downtown area (close to where this photo was taken). But the weather yesterday was hot and windy, which helped carry the smoke and ash across a very large area and make the air itself feel combustible. We knew the fires were far away, but it was still a little unnerving. They continue to burn throughout the state, with dozens listed as "out of control."'
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

I took this photo on Thursday, October 17, at around 5pm in the parking lot of Sydney University. This is what most of the sky over the city looked like yesterday as bushfires raged across the area.
