A Taste of Autumn: Westchester Businesses Embrace the Spirit of Fall
The leaves are changing, the nights are getting cooler, and we’re taking our jackets, hats and scarves down from the attic. Fall is here, and Westchester County is embracing it in a big way. From restaurants and coffee shops to spas and breweries, there are several great places to celebrate the changing of the seasons and get your own little taste of Autumn.
First, we head to Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, a New York craft brewery based in Elmsford, New York, where a gently spiced Pumpkin Ale is flowing from the taps. Made with real pumpkin puree, this fall-themed brew is milder than your average pumpkin ale, but packs enough of a pumpkin kick to get you through the coldest of Autumn nights.
Captain Lawrence is also hosting a special farm-to-brewery event on Saturday, October 26th, entitled “The Brewery Falls Back,” where they will be releasing a special harvest ale alongside a harvest market. “Fall Back,” brewed with farm-grown organic hops from their neighbors across the river, J&A Farms, is an english mild that boasts the first-ever use of CLBC’s hop back, a pressurized vessel used to infuse intense hop flavors. The beer will be available not only on their regular draft system, but also in three special casks, each conditioned with a different hop variety. To top it all off, Jeff Bialis of J&A Farms will be at the event selling a variety of harvest vegetables.
Next, we travel south to Oasis Day Spa in Dobbs Ferry, where owners Bruce and Marti Schoenberg are offering a variety of refreshing fall treatments. A returning favorite from autumns past is the Pumpkin Mani/Pedi, where your hands and feet will enjoy being massaged with a rich pumpkin butter packed with vitamins and antioxidants, leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth.
If a mani/pedi is not what you’re looking for, try Oasis’ Pumpkin Spice Body Scrub, an exfoliating, hydrating treatment with the sweet smell of pumpkin and cinnamon that will leave you feeling refreshed and renewed.
We then take you up the Hudson River to Tarrytown, NY, where the award winning Coffee Labs Roasters is serving up a mean Pumpkin Spice Latte. In fact, Coffee Labs can make almost any of your favorite caffeinated (or decaf!) concoctions with a pumpkin twist, including anything from a simple Pumpkin Spice coffee to a Pumpkin Spice Cappuccino.
Finally, we end our journey at Mount Vernon's own Maggie Spillanes, a beloved Irish pub. Maggie’s is currently featuring a variety of fall beverages, including Oktoberfest beers and the aforementioned Captain Lawrence Pumpkin Ale. The Pumpkin Ale will be on special at their annual Halloween Bash on October 31st, selling for $4 a pint or $10 a pitcher. Maggie’s adds their own special twist to the brew by serving it in a frosted pint glass donned with cinnamon and brown sugar on the rim.
Maggie’s, along with sister restaurants Mickey Spillanes and Molly Spillanes, is also cooking up a variety of fall dishes using only the freshest harvest ingredients, such as flounder stuffed with zucchini and harvest squash. Make sure to head to any of these great pubs for what’s quite literally “a taste of Autumn.”
Whether you’re going out for a bite to eat, a quick drink (alcoholic or not!), or looking for a relaxing day at the spa, there’s a place to go to embrace the spirit of fall and celebrate the harvest season. So tell us, what are YOUR favorite local spots for fall specials?
