    Paella at Portobello

One of life pleasures that I really miss living in the desert is a proper farmer’s market, the kind that inspires all of us to love food, really love it, love it from the moment it grows out of the ground to the moment it ends up in our bellies; the kind of farmer’s market that communicates the tenderness and commitment from the grower to the cook to the eater.

Portobello Market in London is this kind of market for me. On a spring Saturday morning, I can think of fewer joys than to take a stroll here. All your senses are satisfied, the sumptuous colors for your eyes, the saccharine smell of fresh baked goods, the quickened chatter of happy people, the myriad touch of handmade crafts, and of course the samples, the samples that begin to fire up the engine of your imagination.

I am blessed to have a job that allows me to travel to many different farmer's markets around the world, from San Diego to Paris, the borderless love for food unites all market goers, and the lucky ones like myself get to witness the expression of love in the making of the food. I snapped this photo of the owner of this paella stand at Portobello Market last May, frozen in time, his irreplaceable enthusiasm for cooking. It was also the beginning of a beautiful exchange, he gave me a plate of paella, and I sent him this photo.

Food is my favorite kind of open hand, my favorite kind of welcome and my favorite kind of friendship. Food gets us to dream, the kind of universal dream that communicates not with language, but with instinct and taste. The best kind of dream.
