LIGHT FROM THE ‘DARK CONTINENT’ - Emerging Influential Voices From Africa
The western world is replete with trends of increasing hostility to the gospel of Jesus Christ in several nations; and many of the Christians in said countries seem passive and do not stand up to these bullies Yet we have Christian leaders who have risen out of Africa and have turned out to be champions of the message of Christianity, not just in their countries and the African continent, but all around the world.
Sometimes referred to as spiritual giants, these men have achieved great and awe-inspiring feats; taking the good news that came to Africa so long ago to millions across the distant lands of the western world from where the message first came.
Particularly in the countries where they are based, these men of God can simply not be described as passive. We acknowledge some of these notable Christian leaders of African descent in the twenty-first century.
Pastor Sunday Adelaja of the Embassy of God Church in Kiev, Ukraine – a ministry that has thrived over the past 19 years. He hails from Nigeria and his teeming congregation of about 25,000 ranks as one of the largest congregations in Europe. He is undeterred in the face of persecution from the government for religious, political and ethnic reasons; and he continues to be a relevant force in his country.
Founder and leader of the Miracle Centre Cathedral, Pastor Robert Kayanja, started his church as one man in a paper reed shack in Kampala. Today, the church membership numbers in hundreds of thousands, with over 1,000 branches; the headquarters in Kampala is a mega-church. In addition, he runs a Christian channel which can be seen in most parts of Africa.
Perhaps one of the most prominent pastors from Africa is Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the president of Believers Loveworld Incorporated, commonly known as Christ Embassy. His ministry has both national and international reach, affecting lay individuals, pastors of other churches and government officials alike. Bestselling author, healing minister, televangelist and pastor, he is quite popular for organising massive crusades in the UK, USA, Nigeria and South Africa, with a record of over 3.5 million people in a single night’s event. With thousands of churches in various countries of the world, the presence and influence of Pastor Chris has consistently increased through his books, video messages, websites and other pastors that have attended his meetings.
The ministry of the likes of Pastor Chris and T.B. Joshua is creating a wave of religious tourism as it were. Pastors and evangelists from several nations flood the international airports, scheduled to attend Christian training meetings in a bid to achieve similar results with their ministries. The upcoming international pastors and partners conference in Christ Embassy is an example of one such programme; thousands of delegates from over 150 countries have planned to attend the conference in Lagos in the month of November. Testimonies of attendees of this particular programme attest to its impact in their lives, inspiring many others to join them in the quest for spiritual enlightenment on the shores of Africa.
Indeed, Africa has been established as a veritable leader in the Christianisation of the world. We pray for the blessing of God on these leaders, as they continue to fulfil the mandate of Christ to preach the gospel to all nations of the earth.
