Developmentally Delayed Teen Pinned as Honorary Police Officer
Logan has global developmental delays and has faced many challenges. I am fortunate enough to be his storyteller, sharing his accomplishments as well as his hurdles with an online following via the Facebook page The Crumb Diaries. When the readers discovered it was Logan's birthday, they wanted to know what they could do. After speaking with Logan, and understanding that money has little meaning to him, we discussed making a donation in honor of his birthday. To us, the decision who to donate to was simple and we picked our local K9 program who has faced many budgetary cutbacks and is important to us. We set up a donation site on gofundme and the donations started pouring in, reaching over $5,000.00.
When our police department learned of Logan's generous gift, they decided to do something for him. We went and were fitted with a uniform, and on Thursday night we attended his ceremony which blew me away.
This experience has taught me so many lessons. I have realized that there are wonderful people surrounding us, both in our city and our online community. I understand that though challenged, my child is not limited and he can overcome things and be an important, contributing member of society in his own special way. I have learned that my son touches lives, inspiring and motivating people to do their best, and I have accepted that it does indeed 'take a village'.
When we decided to make this donation, I assumed we would gather up a little birthday money, write the check and that would be that. I never dreamed that it would snowball into such a memorable event for so many people.
I can say in all honesty, we are a richer family after this experience, and I cannot thank the people involved enough. The readers who shared and contributed, and the Amesbury Police Department who for one night, made my son feel like one of them..and that is truly priceless.
