This iReport is part of an assignment:
Churciness And The Damaged
By Kenneth Stepp
I Wanted to talk about the damaged people that are left behind after being ran over by the fundamentalist church. This is a huge number. I receive emails from just about every angle one could think of on the Churchiness subjects I write about so much.
I receive quite a few "hate emails" daily. Almost all are fundamentalist that would say the are followers of Jesus Christ. But at least double the number of those emails are the emails from people that have been damaged and left behind by their churches.
Some of these stories are hideous. It is hard to believe that people that profess to love others, could do these things to other humans. But they do. In fundamentalist Christianity it is common practice. But those inside fundamentalist Christianity would say and believe that this is crazy talk. You see. They are programmed to excuse themselves from guilt after preforming a deed in a way that lined up with their belief system. They are responsible for the delivery of a word or deed. Not the outcome. Yes. They actually believe this. This is a seriously disgusting practice when the deliver a message they received from God. It usually ends in tragedy. But that did what God told them to. Of course if they honestly believe the phrase "You will know them by their fruit". They would see that speaking for God is not something they should continue doing. Instead of hearing from God, they are actually just reciting their doctrine when a giving advice. The vast majority of the aforementioned doctrine is based on things that are not in the bible, or wasn't in the original bible, or based on something added to the bible centuries later. I have never met anyone in the fundamentalist church that has taken the time to actually learn through deep study what the bible actually said, if they added or edited an event into the bible, or was just made up. Why? Because they are taught that the bible is the inerrant word of God. An impossible thing to believe if you simply scratch the surface in manuscript studies. But getting past the programming is near impossible.
For them to simply see the obvious is tough. For example. If God wrote the bible, he misspelled a lot, allowed ALL original documents to be lost, wrote opposing stories all over the place, and had editors to continue adding complete stories to the new testament for at least 1800 years. I do not think so. But again. They are told to even look at these things is heresy. This is a great way to keep the faithful, faithful I suppose. Of course, it is disingenuous to control followers when saying "We follow the God of truth". That is just untrue.
Helping those that were abandoned, like myself, takes years of deprogramming to get past the hurt. To help them find a Christian belief based on truth, rather than lies, is the goal I set for them. It has taken so much to reach the point of saying "I am a Christian" again. You see. When they damage someone, it goes deep down to everything they believe in, everything that mattered in the life before and during their time as a fundamentalist. This is always an emotional time. Watching them slowly become grounded again is so rewarding. Worth my time, and the time others I work with as well.
