Davao donates P18.5M to quake victims
By Ben O. Tesiorna
As they always do in times of disasters, the City Government of Davao under the Duterte administration donated P18.5 million to the victims of the Visayas tremor that hit Bohol and Cebu City last week.
This, by far, is the biggest donation made by the Duterte administration to calamity victims in the recent past.
Last Friday, the 17th City Council under Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte hastened the approval of an ordinance extending financial assistance worth P18.5 million to 36 affected municipalities in Bohol and Cebu that were struck by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake.
At least 35 municipalities - 10 from Cebu province and 25 from Bohol - will receive P500,000 each while P1 million will be given to Maribojoc town in Bohol, whose mayor, Leoncio Evasco Jr., served as chief of staff of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for more than a decade.
The recipient municipalities and cities from Cebu are Argao, Boljoon, Cebu City, Dumanjug, Mandaue City, Minglanilla, Sibonga, Tabogon, Talisay City, and Toledo City.
Bohol towns receiving half a million pesos each are Albuquerque, Alicia, Arlequera, Balilihan, Batuan, Bilar, Buenavista, Calape, Carmen, Catigbian, Corella, Duero, Getafe, Guindulman, Inabanga, Jagna, Loay, Loboc, Loon, Panglao, Sierra Bullones, Sikatuna, Tagbilaran City, Tubigon, and Ubay.
The donation is sourced from the city's disaster funds which has a total appropriation of P129.5 million.
No less than Mayor Duterte flew to Bohol and Cebu on Sunday to hand over the money to the recipients and personally visit his friend Mayor Evasco.
Late last week, former mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio also visited Bohol and brought with her some donations she sourced from her friends and supporters. The former mayor also visited Maribojoc and met with Mayor Evasco.
"Luoy kaayo si Mayor Evasco. As in, naluoy gyud ko. When he saw me, teary-eyed sya and hugged me so hard. Ana pa sya, karon kasabot nako unsa imoha nafeel namatyan ka og 30 (constituents)," Duterte said.
The Duterte administration never fail to make cash donations to the tune of millions of pesos to areas affected by calamities in the past decades. When Ondoy struck Luzon, Davao donated P10 million in cold cash. During Sendong, the city again donated P3 million to Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities with the father and daughter Dutertes personally delivering the cash.
When Pablo struck the provinces of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley, the Dutertes again send food reliefs and cash amounting to millions of pesos.
