The yasukuni shrine Japan's perpetual nightmare !
The visits Prime Minister Koizumi made to the Yasukuni Shrine, I believe, had nothing to do with approval ratings. He paid respects at the Yasukuni Shrine to pay respects to the people of Japan who fought and lost their lives for the country and to pray for the peace of their souls.
The 20th century was a century in which human rights were infringed upon in numerous parts of the world, and Japan also bears responsibility in that regard. I believe that we have to look at our own history with humility and think about our responsibility.
I have to express sympathy from the bottom of my heart to those people who were taken as wartime comfort women. As a human being, I would like to express my sympathies, and also as prime minister of Japan I need to apologize to them.
Shinzo Abe Japanese Prime Minister
Over the decades since the end of ww2 there has been a lot of controversy about the yasukuni shrine !,
Every time a Japanese dignitary or politician dares to risk international criticism and anger by visiting the shrine all hell breaks loose especially in Korea and China who remember the atrocities committed against them by the Japanese war machine !
I,as a British expat Japanese resident with Sons married to Japanese and half Japanese grand children like so many other Westerners who like Japan and live here will stay neutral and NOT be judgemental about that shrine, Japanese officials like the present Prime Minister as you note above have sincerely and repeatedly expressed regret, remorse and apologized for Japan's involvement and actions in ww2 ! If some Japanese, especially those who lost loved ones and family members during that war want to pay respects and honor their relatives at the shrine that is their right and their business to do so just as it is in any other country and it is wrong for outsiders to perpetually protest and condemn the Japanese for doing so!
The Nazis committed unspeakable warcrimes but we don't here or see the World going bananas when the germans pay their respect in the same manner as the Japanese !
It's time to forget and forgive and bury the hatchet together with the animosities and let Japan move on with new generations who had nothing to do with ww2.
In the 5 years I have lived here I have found MOST Japanese hard working, honest, gracious, polite, kind and helpful in every possible way. It is the World's safest, law abiding society and I have lived everywhere, The young Japanese are for the most part in the dark about ww2 and we should perhaps leave well enough alone rather than stoke the fires of reviving the horrors of yestertime which serves no purpose for the future.....as the old sayings go...to each their own...and let sleeping dogs lie !
