This is all due Mrs. Verene Shepherd member of the United Nation’s Working Group of Experts on People of African descent, demanding a ban on age old dutch folk feast called Sinterklaas feest in the Netherlands. National discussion dominated the local media and more than 1.5 million facebookers liked the pro-zwartepiet page. Facebook.com/pietitie Mrs. Sherperd will head a workgroup to investigate if sinterklaas feest and more Zwarte piet has any relation to racism and slavery. According to the local newspaper Telegraaf diplomats in Geneva and New York requested resignation of Verene Shepherd. The facebookers argued that the next step would be the ban of a white Christmas, Santa Claus and his elves, carnival, Halloween, thanksgiving, Easter bunny and even valentine’s day, all can relate to the some link to discrimination. We should also consider the point of view of Blackberry it sounds racist to me. It is the opinion of many facebookers that Verene Shepherd should redirect her efforts to real problems, modern day illegal human trafficking, not a non-issue of a tradition dating back 1427!!! “I am black born out of Suriname’s parent’s descendants from African slaves. I am black and felt happy as a child celebrating this cultural party, I especially remembered by grandmother which also was born on December 5th, double the party I never felt discriminated, this is what you make of it so Verene Shepherd STOP it”, according to a facebooker interviewed. An general appeal was made on the UN facebook page to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, to make her stop this nonsense research, and make Mrs. Shepherd do some actual work at the United Nations or get her fired! Furthermore the appeal continued to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, to please redirect resources in world peace, human rights, sex equality and hunger issues in the world instead of making time for the investigation of a cultural festivity in the Netherlands which origin in 1427 well before African-Caribbean slavery was invented. Also some agreed that the United Nation should be banned since it has yet to be able to resolve military conflicts. Sinterklaas feest is celebrated not only in the Netherlands but also in the Caribbean on Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire and in Suriname. The Caribbean island do not know what all the fuss is about, it is just a happy time with presents for children.
