Peter Drucker once quoted; Innovation is the specific instrument of entrepreneurship. The act that endows resources with a new capacity to create wealth.
Creativity is key in the world of entrepreneurship, technology and innovation and due to this ideology, Kenya has created its own platform in this sphere and brought to life an idea dubbed Upstart Africa.
Upstart Africa is a business reality TV bringing people together to create a culture of entrepreneurship through entertainment and education by auditioning and recruiting the best. This is the first of its kind in Kenya and it plans to extend the audience and contestants to the neighboring regions which is East Africa.
The aim of Upstart Africa is to bring the "cool and fun factor" into technology and entrepreneurship. One of the main purposes is to influence attitudes on technology and entrepreneurship, to inspire innovations that achieve both economic value and social impact.
The CEO of Upstart Africa Kenga Sankei, a professional herdsman emphasizes on the need for young people to be decisive and creative when it comes to building their careers. Getting a job is quite challenging especially for young people but ideally being creative can help one venture into a career which he/she aspires.
These young techpreneurs will be divided into 8 teams of 3 and will be competing to develop commercially viable and socially impactful innovations for a period of 13 weeks. The teams will be offered professional support, capacity building training, and leadership skills from the various mentors and investors. The winning team in the end will receive $50,000 in investment.
Upstart’s vision is to inspire thousands of young people across Africa to take up technology and entrepreneurship as a viable alternative to job seeking.
