On the road to Mandalay (or perhaps the road away from Mandalay, I forget) is exotic Bagan. Western tourists still have not found this treasure, and you won’t find a McDonalds within a thousand of miles, but it really should be added to your “bucket list.” The best way to see Bagan is by balloon, a surprisingly modern possibility in ancient Myanmar.
From the 9th to 13th centuries, Bagan was the capital of the area that would become known as Burma or Myanmar. Over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in Bagan from the 11th to the 13th century, of which the remains of over 2200 still survive.
