Pena Palace (Portugal)
In the hills between Lisbon and the Atlantic coast lies a beautifully wooded retreat that served for centuries as the summer home for the royal family of Portugal. One of their palaces, Pena, is especially picturesque, located high on the mountain, with commanding views of the surrounding region. It was built by King Ferdinand in the mid-1800s on the site of an old monastery. Surrounding this very visible landmark are a series of enchanting nature trails that wind their way through hundreds of different plant and tree species and alongside peaceful water features and tiny lakes. I had the privilege of exploring this delightful Portuguese retreat while planning a Walking Adventure for November 2014.
