    The last cigarette

    July 9 1992

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     tn5rr2012 told me, 'I wanted people to know it is possible to quit at any age and that all one needs to do is have a mind set to do it. I know that if I had not quit I would probably be dealing with lung issues now and that I probably would look a lot older than I am. I enjoy the fact I can take a deep breath and not cough or laugh really hard and loud without a coughing fit happening. I love to make my mother laugh but I have to be careful because her laughing can send her into a coughing fit and breathing issues. She quit at the age of 61 but the damage was done. At 76 she has chronic COPD and emphysema, cannot walk very far without becoming winded. '
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

I had smoked 2 packs a day for 7 years when I quit. I was about 25 years old and flying across the country. Airlines had just banned smoking on domestic flights that past year and where I was going I could not smoke. So I took the opportunity and quit cold turkey. I took it one day at a time. I don't remember it being very difficult but then time may have warped my memory. I have not had a cigarette since that day but when someone lights up near me I take a deep breath. That first puff of smoke off a cigarette still gets me but then everything afterwards repels me. I am the worst ex smoker, I can't stand to be around anyone who smokes or has smoked nor get into a enclosed space with a smoker. I still every once in awhile will have a dream that I started smoking again and wake up distressed but then realized that is was only a dream. When I quit smoking the major brand with a red label cost 99 cents a pack. I could not afford to smoke these days. My mother who smoked for over 30 years quit about 5 years after I did, she is now dying of COPD and emphysema as did her father who was a chain smoker. My child started to smoke and recently she switched over to an electronic cigarette, I am hoping she stick with it but they will probably find out the dangers of THAT habit sooner than later. The photo is of me around 1990 2 years before I quit, makes people laugh when I show it to them
