    Your 'Aha' weight-loss moments

    Intentions

My wake up call came in In May of 2012 when I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2. This truly frightened me, and I knew I had to make some serious changes in my lifestyle. I had always been good at working hard, but not so good at paying attention to my health. I did some serious soul searching as to how I intended to live my life, as an unhealthy or healthy person. I chose healthy, and with that intention set about on my new journey.

My first step was to get some support. I had been on every diet in the world in my life, but my intention of health included losing weight in a healthy and balanced way. I was lucky enough to be able to stay two weeks at a wonderful world renowned local health and fitness resort called Canyon Ranch. I got my resting metabolic rate measured scientifically and got all the numbers I needed to know, including what calorie level NOT to eat below or above. I learned about nutrition, including carbs ( I hadn't even known what a carb was before), and took healthy cooking classes. I consulted with an exercise physiologist and got an exercise plan designed for me that took into account some of my physical limitations.I tried yoga, pilates, aqua fit, machines in the fitness center, and got my targeted heart rate. I sat in lectures learning all about good health and weight loss from a holistic approach including medical, nutritional, physical (exercise) and emotional/spiritual perspectives.
My next challenge was to implement what I learned into my real life. I needed to focus on one step at a time, or it was just too overwhelming. Baby steps, I reminded myself , are just fine. Well, taking one step at a time, starting with giving up both soda pop and smoking and walking my dogs 15 minutes a day, I have transformed my life.

A little over a year later, I achieved my number one wellness goal of reversing my diabetes. My A1C level is now a rocking 5.4 and my cholesterol and triglyceride numbers are awesome as well. I am down 42 pounds, and have increased my activity level tremendously. I still intend to lose more weight .That part has typically slowed down, but I figure I didn't gain this much weight overnight, and it will take time to lose it.

Most importantly, this is a lifestyle change for me, not the dreaded "D" word, so I have every intention of staying healthy by living a healthy lifestyle. I am grateful for all the support I have gotten from my family and friends, and hopefully my story can inspire others facing the challenge.
