Blu-ray: Disney Planes, Roaring into Christmas
By Gabrielle Pantera
HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Daily Star) 2013/12/2 – “I've always loved airplanes,” says Disney Planes director Klay Hall. “My dad was in the Navy and his dad was also a pilot. They flew all their lives and passed that love of aviation to me.”
“When I was a kid here in California,” says Hall, “my dad and I would grab some burgers and Cokes and go to the local runway to watch the planes take off and land. I'd sit there and sketch as he talked about the characteristics of the airplanes. I still have a couple of those drawings. So when this project came up, I was able to really jump into this universe.”
Planes comes out early this year to be in time for holiday gift giving. This animated film is about Dusty, a crop duster airplane who wants to do more with his life then go back and forth and dust crops. He watches plane races and dreams of flying in the Wings Around the World tournament. He goes to the qualifying race to see if he can race. He comes in 6th, not good enough to race. When one of the other planes is disqualified for illegal fueling he gets his chance to fly in the race. Can he get over his fear of heights to win the race?
Halfway through the movie Dusty comes into his own and the other racers start to respect him for his determination. There is humor that appeals to adults and children. Young children will enjoy the movie and benefit from the lesson of the value of helping others.
Dane Cook is the voice of Dusty Crophopper. His best friend Chug (Brad Garrett) is a gas tanker. His friend Dottie (Teri Hatcher) doesn’t want him to attempt the race because she doesn’t want him to be disappointed. Navy fighter jet Skipper (Stacy Keach) helps Dusty train. At the international race, Dusty meets French-Canadian Rochelle (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Indian Ishani (Priyanka Chopra), British Bulldog (John Clees), Mexican Chupacabra (Carlos Alazraqui), and fellow American Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith).
