Christmas Lights at the Shinsegae Department Store in Seoul

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Morgan Brenner recently took this photo of the Shinsegae Department Store in Seoul, South Korea. Brenner, originally from Ohio, is a 23-year-old Korean language student at Chungnam National University, hoping to stay in South Korea for further studies next year.

This year will be her first Christmas away from the US and her family. "I will be celebrating it with Korean friends and other foreign students who are also spending their first Christmas away from home," she says.

Living in a smaller city in South Korea, the Christmas lights in Seoul were Brenner's first encounter with real decorations this year. "I sent the photo to friends and family in the US shortly after I took it, and my father commented that Seoul seemed far more Christmas-y than my hometown in Ohio at the time."

I took this shot of the Shinsegae Department Store, Seoul's oldest department store, while waiting for a bus in the Seoul's Myeongdong shopping district, during rush hour on November 26th, 2013. Because of heavy traffic, I had to wait for just the right moment to get an unobstructed shot of the building from across the street. It had just stopped raining, so the glow of the lights is reflected in the wet asphalt. The N Seoul Tower, one of Seoul's most recognizable landmarks, appears in the background.
