Dominican xenophobia or Regional Blackmail???
To understand the situation on the ground , we will have to see what is really going on between Haiti and Dominican Republic, since 2010 when the earthquake destroyed much of Port of Prince and other near by Town, the Dominican Republic have open up it boarder to Haitians. Last year alone the Dominican Republic spent $130,000,000 millions US dollars on Haitian women giving birth in the DR due to the lack of Hospitals in Haiti, According to Canadianhaitiaction.com Haiti will spend US $261,000,000 average on health care in Haiti, The Dominican Republic spent last year 1/2 of that amount on illegal Haitian women giving birth alone...No other Caribbean Nation part of CARICOM is doing anything like that for Haiti. Only Cuba is providing Doctors and medical equipment to Haiti,
The recent false attacks against the Dominican Republic by member of CARICOM and Haitians living in the DR and other countries is causing serious problems in the island, Many Haitian group are calling for an European and American boycott of th Dominican Republic and tourist industry there, which at the same time will affect the jobs of most of the employee of the tourist industry in DR ,which are Haitians, which send most of their money back home, this will cause a Domino effect of negative consequences in Haiti, which receive almost $1 billions Dollars from Haitians working in the DR.
According to Dominican reports , there are from 500,000 to 2,000,000 Haitians in the DR , on public records only 35,000 have legal residency in the DR. The uncontrolled amount of illegals Haitians in the Dominican Republic have overwhelmed the Dominican system which is weak by it self and is only capable of providing for 7 millions for a population of 10 millions and now ,due to Haiti lack of progress, total collapse and ,the Dominican Government policy of humanitarian help toward Haitians , The friction between Millions of unemployed Dominicans and Millions of Unemployed ,sick and homeless Haitians demanding rights and help in DR is making the relationship between both country and people very unstable. Millions Of Dominican are being left out of the work force by corrupt businessmen that hire cheap labor from Haiti, cause a very tense situation, In boarder provinces 90% of the patients are illegals Haitians, Many Dominicans go to the Hospital only to find long lines of Haitians , with no Documents , no money, and getting FREE health care , thousands of Haitians students cross the boarder daily to get free education in the DR with Free breakfast....Hardly the action of a Xenophobic poor Nation. To add more problems to the issues, Caribbean Nations such as Jamaica, The Bahamas, Trinidad Tobago with their policy of No Haitians are accusing the DR who is doing so much for Haiti of racism, xenophobia, Hate.and are calling for sanctions.
In the meantime Trinidad deported a few Jamaican because they were going to be a burden on the country coffers, and according to The Guardian.co and National security minister , Gary Griffith , Trinidad will deport 30,000 illegals next year, But when DR deport 450 illegals , it is the end of the world in the media.
Is the Dominican Republic the only country that can not deport an overwhelming amount of illegals costing a poor country hundred of millions of dollars???.. How come other Nations like US, Jamaica , Brazil, Trinidad , can deport thousand and the Inter American human right court will not say a word???... Is it Dominican xenophobia or blackmail since no other nation on the Continent want to deal with the many problems Haitians bring along???...And even with all those challenges of dealing with a difficult neighbor, The DR is still providing jobs, free education, free health care to millions of Haitians in the DR.
The number and the fact show that there is no xenophobia in the DR, its a simple reality of two group living in the same limited space, one nation is destroyed, with the most corrupt Political system no agriculture, no hospitals, no school, No forest, The other a less poor nation with similar populations ,trying to survive and now force to carry a very heavy burden ,of financial, health , National interest and Security on their back,, with the choice of either take care of the Haitian problem or be condemned by the International court as a human right violator with the help of Hundreds of organizations trying to obtain Documents for illegals Haitians in the DR, while other Nation closes their doors to Haiti , deport women and children and nothing Happens to them.
