SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from Florida

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Randy Lathrop has seen countless launches during his many years in Cocoa, Florida, but Tuesday evening’s SpaceX launch left a surprise in the sky. “The contrails, we had never seen anything like it,” he said. “The sun came from the west, really lighting up the contrails. One took on a red hue and another one took on a bluish hue. … It had a little teardrop shape. From what I read, it was piercing the atmosphere.” At first, he said people around him thought something had gone wrong with the launch, but in reality everything was OK.
