‘Comedy of Errors’ shown in Phl Senate

THE Philippine Senate was converted into a playhouse where the famous “Comedy of Errors” by William Shakespeare was shown for almost an hour, a political analyst said Thursday.
The political analyst, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was referring to the privilege speech delivered Wednesday by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago against her colleague, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile.
Calling a liar, plunderer, human rights violator, tax evader, smuggler and womanizer, Santiago also called Enrile a "hypersexualized serial womanizer," an "icon of shameless lying," and even the "prince of darkness."
“My attacker is the icon of shameless lying. He eats his own words for breakfast. In the law of evidence, he has absolutely no credibility. Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus. False in one thing, false in all things,” the lady senator said.
The personal feud between the two senators is an offshoot of a privilege speech delivered by Enrile Wednesday last week questioning Santiago’s mental health.
“In Cagayan, it is said that when he was a baby, his mother dropped him on his head. Now, he is the poster boy of stem cell treatment that has long gone past its expiry date,” Santiago said in her speech delivered right in front of Enrile.
Quoting a January 1998 article on the Chicago Tribune, Santiago said Enrile's wife had walked out on him after charging adultery. She said Enrile's wife told the Tribune that she could no longer "tolerate his chasing after other women, including domestic helpers, cooks, and assistants.”
Meanwhile, Senate President Franklin Drilon on Thursday appealed to Enrile and Santiago to make the Christmas season as cooling off period and end their tirades.
”Now that they have already expressed what they want to say, perhaps we could ask for ceasefire and for them to calm down. Anyway, it’s Christmas season,” Drilon said in radio dzRH interview.
Drilon said the exchange of personal attacks between Santiago and Enrile is not acceptable to the public including the many people still recovering from calamities such as super typhoon Yolanda and the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that greatly affected the Visayas area.
”This kind of conflict is not acceptable for our countrymen especially at this time,” Drilon said.
