Should the Media Go To Newtown?

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     With the one year anniversary of the Newtown shooting tragedy approaching, journalists around the country are weighing some tough ethical issues when it comes to coverage, tone and sensitivity. iReporter marcusharun weighed in with an original video on his thoughts regarding media coverage in/from Newtown.
    - Echerneff, CNN iReport producer

Connecticut-resident and President of the Quinnipiac University Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Marcus Harun asks the media if they will go to Newtown, Conn. for the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Shooting and why.

While responding to CNN's Brian Stelter's question about what should be covered on Reliable Sources this week, he asks the national media: what will you gain from being in the town, where you are unwelcome, on the anniversary? Can't you honor the victims through creative storytelling and avoid angering residents who are grieving?

Over 2,000 people have signed a petition banning the media on and around the anniversary. Newtown First Selectwoman asked the media to stay away.

The story can, and should, be told in a more respectful and tasteful way.
