    Remembering Mandiba

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ScarletM699 told me, 'I feel really sad eventhough I knew his death was inevitable. Nelson Mandela saved us from a bloody civil war. So few people outside of South Africa really understand what it was like before he was released. The referendum where whites only voted for or against change! It was so tense! We thought the right wing would launch a bloody civil war refusing to relinquish their control over the black majority. But we got through it....and 99% of it is thanks to Nelson Mandela and no one else. There has never been a man like him before in history and probably never will again. I feel so privileged to have lived through South Africa history. It will always be home. It is where I grew up and it where my heart will always be.'
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

I grew up in South Africa during Apartheid and was still there when Mandela was released from prison; we had our first democratic elections and witnessed his inauguration. I have a thick scrapbook of cuttings from all our SA newspapers from 1990-1994. I'd like to share a poem I wrote in 1990, the day he was finally released from Victor Verster Prison. I was 21 at the time.
