During Mandela's imprisonment, no images of him were allowed. For 27 years no one had seen him at all! We'd only seen pictures from the week he was tried and sent to Robben Island. On the weekend he was to be released - Feb. 2, 1990 - the two main Sunday newspapers in South Africa competed for cover story. The Sunday Times did an artists impression of what Mandela would look like on the day of his release whereas the Sunday Times got the big coup - the first photo of Mandela the world had seen for 27 years!!!
