Traveling to the Bahamas? BEWARE of Vacation Club SCAMS

Have you ever been on vacation, Bahamas to be exact, and been offered free breakfast and cash to view a "short" presentation or tour? Well let me be the first to tell you, WHEN IN THE BAHAMAS, DO NOT BE PERSUADED BY THE FREE FOOD OR TAKE ANY SALES OFFERS FROM DISHONEST SALES REPS WHO INTENTIONALLY ARE PREYING ON TOURISTS AND ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN TAKING YOUR MONEY!! I fell victim and want to help as much families/tourist STAY AWAY from this.

First off, let me say that I love the Bahamas and have been returning for travel at least twice a year since 2009. This is why I have been looking to purchase some sort of property or vacation rental. I have never had a bad experience with the lovely people of the islands until my last visit in December, 2013. I was coerced into a contract with Ocean Reef Resort/Vacation club in which I was informed that I can cancel at any time if I feel I am no longer benefiting from the club.

I read the contract before signing in which I understood that in order to get a full refund, I must cancel in three days. Nowhere else in the contract did it discuss termination procedures. Therefore I asked the representative Brian and his manager David (I'll leave out their last names) about cancellation. I was informed that I can cancel at anytime, however I will forfeit my down payment and closing cost.

Sounds good?... However, when I called to cancel during the 3 day window, I could not get in touch with the club (No Answer). I could not fax them from my office or home line due to the international fax number provided. I finally got a hold of them on the fourth day of my contract. I informed them of the situation and the difficulties I had contacting them, however they stated that I cannot cancel my membership and rudely stated that I should have read and made sure that I understood the contract before signing.

The Ocean Reef representative also informed me that I have no excuse because I could of went to a Kinkos or Staples store to fax them my cancellation request. Funny, when they wanted our money they provided us with a driver who escorted us to an ATM, breakfast, lunch and all the hospitality you could imagine.

I was very upset at this, these were the same individuals who were treating us so nice and there to explain all the contract details, to make sure we understood what we were signing, now they were dismissing me, the rep went on to say that it does not matter what was told to me "Verbally" which was their representation of the contract. I explained that I was willing to loose the down payment, but I still want to cancel my membership because I do not appreciate how they conducted their business. Guess What?.. NO LUCK!

I am very disappointed and sadden by the way they have treated my Husband and I and want to bring as much awareness to the matter to help prevent someone else from falling for their scams.

Bring the contract home and look it over before you sign!
there's no rush in reviewing the contract and signing if it's such a great deal!
