    We Danced

    Bronx, New York

I turned 10 years old on January 28, 1990 and it was a memorable birthday because my parents held a fun party for me, my siblings and a few of my friends at McDonalds.
Fourteen days later on a cold , winter day on February 11, 1990, I still remember hearing my mother scream. Initially, I was alarmed that something terrible had taken place; soon after joining my parents in the living room, I saw my mother was smiling and dancing and jumping with joy. I did not know what all the fuss was about. The radio was on and a news station was presenting information that would change history forever. Nelson Mandela has been released from prison after 27 years! My younger siblings and I joined my mother to dance with joy as my father explained and introduced us to the legacy of a great man.
